From the articles:
Catherine Ariemma, teacher of the Georgia-based Lumpkin County High School, has been suspended after allowing students to dress in mock Ku Klux Klan robes for a history project. Ariemma told the press she had asked the students to film scenes from American history for a course combining US history with film study, which included a scene where students were exploring American racism.
During a break in the project, four students donning white robes walked down the hallway and through the cafeteria, sparking outraged among students who later informed their parents.
She told Associated Press: “This is a film about racism and we have to discuss racism in our society. You can’t discuss racism and not include the Klan.” The teacher was suspended for two days and had to miss a yearbook ceremony in her honor. “My students didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. “I don’t know what else to do. The topic of the film is a good topic. Maybe that’s the reason we have this blowing up — because we don’t talk about it enough.”
Lola Adesioye, Hufftington Post blogger, published an article calling Ariemma “misguided but not racist”.
There will be a student assembly in a couple of days to discuss the situation, and a town hall meeting will be held in a couple of weeks.
